AT THE SOUTHERN END OF KINTYRE

Visit the Mull of Kintyre and Southend

Make space for the southern peninsula: the Mull of Kintyre lighthouse landscape, Southend’s coast and a slower day around Dunaverty. Build a visit around the weather and your own walking ability.

A little planning goes a long way

The Northern Lighthouse Board lists no public access to the lighthouse itself. Do not assume tower entry or visitor facilities. Check current access and conditions before travelling to this remote location.

Where is the Mull of Kintyre?

The Mull is the headland at the southern end of the Kintyre peninsula. The lighthouse is a separate destination from Campbeltown and Southend: allow room in your day for the journey rather than treating it as a quick town-centre stop.

The lighthouse landscape

The lighthouse dates from 1788. The Northern Lighthouse Board’s official page gives its history and lists public access as unavailable. The surrounding landscape and a lighthouse interior visit are different things; no tower admission is offered by this guide.

Plan a flexible southern Kintyre day

Start by checking conditions and access for the Mull. Keep Southend and Dunaverty as a separate coastal stop if time and conditions allow. Machrihanish and the Gauldrons offer another day’s coastal exploring; there is no need to fit every southern stop into one afternoon.

Access, parking availability, toilets and step-free suitability at the Mull have not been verified here. If these are essential, check before setting out. Carry suitable clothing and navigation, and avoid relying on mobile reception.

Walking the Kintyre Way?

Use our Kintyre Way stage guide and the official route maps. A visit to the Mull lighthouse is not a substitute for following the waymarked trail.

Lighthouse history and public-access information checked with the Northern Lighthouse Board on 1 October 2026.
